Spring Serenades
April 9 , 2011
The Tuscarawas Philharmonic continues its Diamond Anniversary season, with “an evening of sheer delight,” according to Music Director Eric Benjamin.
Spring Serenades will be presented at
7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9
at the Performing Arts Center at Kent State Tuscarawas.
Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings– is the centerpiece of the program, as the orchestra is joined by soloists Steven Stroup, the Philharmonic’s principal French horn player and tenor Robert Frankenberry of Pittsburgh.
Maestro Benjamin comments, “The music is gorgeous, and, in combination with the splendid language, the piece is utterly absorbing. Steve Stroup is such an asset to the Philharmonic and to the community. [He is] every conductor's dream... a deeply sensitive musician hiding under a solid, dependable exterior and positioned behind a treacherous instrument that he loves to play very well. I’m so glad that we can make this opportunity for him to perform this exceptional work, and he for us. It will be a unique joy to experience this music together.”
Tenor Robert Frankenberry will be remembered for his appearance with the orchestra in the comic role of King Kaspar in its production of Amahl and the Night Visitors in December. Benjamin describes him as “a consummate musician who sings with great intelligence and imagination in a melting tenor voice.”
